BARI IN PUGLIA

Bari is an Italian city of 323 098 inhabitants in the Puglia region.
The city is rich in history, which has contributed over the centuries to giving it a remarkable cultural heritage, essentially of an architectural style, which since 2000 is constantly being rediscovered and valorised, are mainly mentioned:
the great Basilica or the Cathedral of San Sabino,
the three main theaters of the city, the Piccinni, the first for construction, the Petruzzelli, the first of importance, and the Margherita, which was built on the sea,
the two stadiums, San Nicola, built for the World Cup in Italy, and the Arena of Victory, built in 1934 as the first true stadium in Bari.

The San Sabino cathedral was built between the 12th and 13th centuries after the destruction of the city (which occurred in 1156) by William I of Sicily,

Ancient Romanesque monuments are found in ancient Bari, including the Basilica of San Nicola (XII century), a masterpiece of Romanesque Apulian architecture. The Cathedral of San Sabino (1170-1178), in whose archives there is a celebrated Exultet (miniature code) before 1025 and containing the liturgy of Holy Saturday.

Interestingly architecturally, the Church of St. Gregory (XI-XII century). Famous for the Norman-Swabian Castle built by Frederick II of Swabia (at least the main nucleus) on the site of previous Norman and Byzantine fortifications. Expanded in the 16th century, when it became home to Isabella d'Aragona, in the nineteenth century the castle was first used as a prison and later to barracks.

In the new town you will find the Archaeological Museum (with many ceramics) and, on the promenade Nazario Sauro, the Provincial Pinacoteca. Not far from the seafront is also the Teatro Petruzzelli, built between 1898 and 1903, recently reopened to the public after a long refurbishment following the fire that seriously damaged it in 1991.
