THE SWABIAN-ANGEVIN FORTRESS OF LUCERA

shadow The Swabian-Angevin Fortress of Lucera

The Swabian-Angevin Fortress, also Lucera Castle, is an historic 13th-century military structure built in the Federal and Angevic ages as well as one of the symbols of the city of Lucera.

On the top of the hill Albano, on which stood the acropolis of the Roman Lucera, defended on three sides by steep sloping walls, the walls of the Fortezza dominate the Tavoliere di Capitanata.

Frederick II built his Palatium in the 1920s to control Saracens forcibly transferred from Sicily to Lucera, which soon became a Muslim citadel. The fortress, whose outer perimeter is still visible today, was built by Charles I of Anjou and completed in 1283.

Today the whole area is a true archaeological mine; is an ancient site where traces of different ages can be seen: Neolithic huts, ruins of the Roman and Swabian times, waterways, remains of the ancient Palatium of Frederick II, the Palace of Charles d'Angiò and an an aisle with an adjacent sacristy dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi.
